Should I cut the hair off the bottom of my dogs feet?

I am going to give my dog a bath today, cut his nails, etc. He has long hair %26amp; the hair on the bottom of his feet between his pads is long. I live in the north east %26amp; we have snow %26amp; cold weather. The hair on his feet gets frozen when he goes out %26amp; he slips when he comes in. I don't know whether the hair protects his feet or hinders them?

Dogs need the hair on the bottom of their feet for when they go outside. It might seem unnecessary top you, but your dog really enjoys it!

i would definitly tske him to a groomer and get them to do it, or ask the vet to see what he would suggest.

he's fine leave his hair alone

Yes, cut it flush with the pads if you can. Practice handling his feet before you bring out the (scary) scissors. Talk to him, and give him a treat afterwards (or after each foot).

Yes, I would cut that hair on the bottom of feet. The hair in between the pads protects the feet. Just cut the hair that grow past the pads and this will ind the slipping and snow that get stuck to feet. This is what we do at the grooming shop and I also do this to my 2 dogs as well. Hope this helped.

Yes,if your dog goes out in the snow, your are supposed to cut the hair that sticks out between his toes, just for that reason, because it freezes.

no cut it off. the hair will just trap things in it and bother his pads. my cavalier king charles spaniel gets his shaved off. its a lot easier. but you just got to make sure you have the right blade cause that would be really bad if you cut his pad on accident. but the blade we use cant hurt his pads. it also helps them fro slipping all over. he could get ice, dirt, little rocks and stuff stuck in there. good luck!

It won't hurt him to cut off the excess hair on the bottom of the feet. In fact trimming hair on feet is good because of the reason you stated (ice stuck on it) they can also get burrs in there too. Don't cut all the hair off. Just enough to where it's even with the pads. His feet will fare better in the long run and he'll probably be more comfortable without getting so much ice stuck to the long hairs.

You can and should trim the hair around the pads, just be sure to use blunt end scissors, to avoid any accidental nip of the pad or the thin skin between the toes. This should be a regular part of the grooming of the feet. It also cuts doen on dirt being tracked into the house.

I also have a breed that has long hair growing between the toes and on the bottoms of the feet. It is necessary for you to trim this hair. It isn't good for him to be slipping and sliding around and having all that wet matted hair on his feet is not healthy for him. It can be the cause of foot fungus and irritation.

It is best to use blunt nosed, curved blade scissors for trimming the hair on the feet. You can take the hair from between the toes and pull it up to the top of the toes and trim it off even with the top of the foot. The hair on the bottom should be trimmed even with the bottom of the foot. Many people use the mustache trimmers to do the feet on their dogs. This makes the job a lot easier though it will take a bit of time to get your dog used to the buzzing of the trimmer. It will also lessen the chance of your nicking the pad when you are trimming the hair.

You can but id advice you pay a Groomer or a vet to do it

I also live in the snow/cold Northeast and I cut the hair on the bottom of my 3 dogs paws between groomer visits. Anything, twig, stone, etc, can get caught in the hair and aggravate/irritate the paw pads. Also, when I bundle them up and take them for a walk, it's easier to wash their paws when we get back home, which is necessary to clean out any rock salt, antifreeze, or whatever else they may have stepped in. Once my little one began hopping on 3 legs during one of our walks this past summer. I carried her back home and lo' and behold I found a tiny sliver of wood stuck between her paws. The kind of wood people use for landscaping. Keep the hair cut to the pad level.

you can trim the hair between the pads but be very careful not to cut the pad. my dogs (Cavaliers) also have long hair between the pads and they do tend to slip on floors sometimes. i live in snow country and snow does get stuck in the hair between pads. i use clippers but i have used scissors.

the hair does not protect the pads. i had one dog that was limping last summer and in checking the feet i found a glob of pine pitch in the hair with a pebble stuck in it. the poor dog still limped for a couple days after i removed it.

you shoudn't cut it..its not wise...if you do want to get it cut, get it done professionally

The pads protect his feet. The hair is just bothering him. We have the same problem with 3 out of our 5 dogs. We live in western Ma, so cut his hair off his feet.

If your dog has hair that is growing from between his pads, then I would advise carefully removing it. (iwth scissors)- the hair covers the pads and can reduce traction.
